After graduation in 1985 Alvaro started his career working for 8 years as a clinical nurse. After that he worked for the last 22 years on public health in developing countries. He started his international career as a humanitarian worker in conflict and post-conflict settings with MSF for 6 years mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Then he worked as a freelance consultant for 16 years on health systems development and human resources for health in Africa, Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia, America and the West Pacific regions.
