Passive Requires Portal or Handheld reader to track movement of tagged objects. Read distance limited to ~20 feet. Relatively inexpensive Tags - $.15 to $3.00 Indefinite tag lifespan Battery Assist Passive (BAP) Still requires signal from antenna (like passive) to activate tag Tag uses onboard battery to boost signal back to antenna Up to 100ft range, Tags ~ $5.00 Active Full battery power tags that beacon a given intervals. Much greater read distances up to 300 feet. Tags ~ $20.00 Deployed where RTLS is required uses RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) to determine tag proximity, triangulation accuracy can vary based on walls and objects UWB (Ultra Wideband) Uses TDOA (Time distance of arrival) location method to determine tag proximity. Very accurate triangulation Much less affected by walls and other obstructions providing an accuracy of 6-12 of where tags actually are! Tags ~ $30.00 RFID Technologies
RFID Applications - Passive Closed Loop Inventory Management (Bin or pallet tagging), WIP, RM, Production, Packaging, Returns, yard Mgmt, etc. Asset Management Any object that has value and needs to be tracked to ensure operational uptime. Portals A controlled passage hat objects must pass through. A.K.A Choke point or squeeze point
RFID Applications - Active Active Tags Battery powered 5 yr life Does NOT require fixed portal to read tags Much greater read distances up to 300 feet Asset Management Identify tagged goods by category, value, priority, expiry date, etc. Tags can respond in given intervals (beacon mode) or when instructed to do so RFID Active Reader Active Tags on Merchandise Active Tags on Merchandise Active Tags on Product

Editor's Notes

  1. Industry Trends RFID as a technology is becoming more ubiquitous and intertwined with day-to-day business operations just as basic computing is used today for which we all take for granted. Today, RFID is mostly seen as an adjunct to operations with customers typically deploying RFID to address a single problem or use case. Once an RFID infrastructure is put into place, that foundation can solve a host of other operational edicts beyond supply chain and production such as personnel tracking / Time & Attendance, Quality assurance, Asset management, access control, etc. The key enabling factor is the type of RFID best suited for the object tracking method such as Passive, Battery Assist, or Active. RFID is closely related to sensor technologies, and that is the ability for a software platform to sense and react to tagged objects that have certain patterns and behavior and to apply business logic to those read events as they occur in real time. Just as robotics today automates the production line, RFID is adding the intelligence to determine what type of actions should be performed based on the movement a given object (WIP or FG item, asset, employee, etc.) in a given area or choke point.
