I grew up in Paragould, Arkansas, which is a small city in Northeast Arkansas known as "the friendly city." I attended Elmwood Elementary School, Paragould Middle School, and Paragould High School. I played the alto saxophone in the band in grades 6-9. In grades 10-12, I served as a manager of the football team for the Paragould High School Bulldogs.
I was active in Boy Scouts from age 11 to 18. In 1973, I served on the staff at Camp Cedar Valley on Pine Trail Reservation in Viola, Arkansas. I taught handicraft and served in the trading post. I also went to the National Scout Jamboree in Moraine State Park, Pennsylvania, that same year.
