LESSON 1, CHAPTER 15, UNIT 5:
LIFE IN THE EARTH SYSTEM
By Ali Mohamed Ali in grade 10
INTRODUCTION = LESSON OBJECTIVE
We are going to know the life in the Earth system.
We are going to know that the biosphere is the portion of Earth that is
inhabited by life.
We are going to know the biotic and abiotic factors interact in the
biosphere.
We are going to know how the Earth is made.
We are going to answer the given questions.
We will summarize this lesson in the form of questions and answers.
Q: HOW IS LIFE IN THE
EARTH SYSTEM?
A: First from a local perspective,
then from a regional point of
view, and finally at the global
scale. Until now, you have been
looking at the Earth system at a
single point in time. However,
the Earth is constantly
changing, every second, every
day, every year.
MAIN IDEA 1
The biosphere is the portion of
Earth that is inhabited by life.
EARTH`S MAJOR INTERCONNECTED
SYSTEMS
Biosphere: is the part of Earth where
life exist.
 Hydrosphere: is the collection of
Earth`s water bodies, ice, and water
vapor.
 Atmosphere: is air blanketing of
Earth`s solid surface.
 Geosphere: is features of Earth`s
surface such as continents, sea floor,
and everything below Earth`s surface.

INTERCONNECTED SYSTEMS
FACTORS OF THE BIOSPHERE

 Water
 Biota: the collection of living
things that live in the
atmosphere.
 Or life
EARTH`S NON-MAJOR
INTERCONNECTED SYSTEMS
 Cryosphere: is the frozen
water part of the Earth
system.
 Lithosphere: is the rigid
outer part of the earth,
consisting of the crust and
upper mantle.

MAIN IDEA 2
Biotic and abiotic factors
interact in the biosphere.
BIOTIC
 Algae
 Fungi
 Microorganism
 Animals
 Coral
 Plants
 Nutrient availability
 Sunlight
 Temperature
 Moisture
 Soil type
 Wind or water current
ABIOTIC
FACTORS
INTERACTION TO BIOSPHERE
Just as one ecosystem is connected to another, all four Earth`s major
interconnected systems are also connected.
A change in one sphere can affect the others.
If plants are removed from a riverbank, for example, rain may flow
more easily from the land to the water.
Atmosphere, geosphere, and hydrosphere are cooperating system
that yield a biosphere full of life.
Sometimes, people mistakenly believe that the Gaia hypothesis
suggests that Earth is a thinking being that regulates geosphere,
atmosphere, hydrosphere.
Many scientists are now devoting their carriers to organizing new
fields to study, such as geobiology and geomicrobiology, to examine
their intriguing relationship.

SYSTEM WITH THEIR

Q: HOW DO BIOTIC AND ABIOTIC
FACTORS INTERACT IN THE
BIOSPHERE?
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
IN YOUR NOTEBOOK:
FORMATION OF THE EARTH
SUMMARY (QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS)
1. What are the major interconnected system of the Earth?
Answer: Biosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, Geosphere.
2. How do biotic and abiotic factors interact in the Biosphere?
Answer: Just as one ecosystem is connected to another, all four Earth`s
major interconnected systems are also connected. A change in one sphere
can affect the others.
3. Give an example of the Earth`s major interconnected system.
Answer: For example, a plant growing in a swamp depends on the soil in
which it grows just as much as on the water in the swamp.
4. Give an example of biotic and abiotic factors interact in the biosphere.
Answer: If plants are removed from a riverbank, for example, rain may flow
more easily from the land to the water.
