Grew up in Essendon, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.Went to St Monica's, Moonee Ponds Primary School and St Columba's Ladies College Secondary School. I did my teacher training at the Institute of Catholic Education (Mercy Teacher's College) and then at the University of Melbourne. I taught for 12 years in Melbourne at schools in Gladstone Park, West Footscray and Greenvale. I have been living and working in London since January 2002. Prior to that 1996-2001, I was living and working in the East Sepik Province, in Wewak, Papua New Guinea for Callan Services for Disabled Persons.
