PARTS OF THE PLANT AND FUNCTIONS
By Andrés Arévalo
Plants
There are three main parts in the plant:
Leaves
Stem
Roots
1. The roots
They fix the plant to the ground.
They absorb water and minerals
from the soil.
2. The stem
It supports the leaves.
It transports water and
minerals from the roots
to the leaves.
3. The leaves
In the leaves,
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
takes place.
The leaves mix:
- Water and minerals from the soil.
- Carbon dioxide (CO2).
- Sunlight.
4. What happens after
photosynthesis?
The plant produces SAP
or GLUCOSE.
The leaves release
oxygen to the atmosphere.
5. Sap or glucose
Sap circulates from the leaves to the
rest of the plant.
6. Respiration in plants
During the day, plants release oxygen
to the atmosphere.
During the night, plants release
carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
It colours the leaves green.
It is essential for photosynthesis.
7. Chlorophyll
