ESSAY 1: STATEMENT OF PURPOSE ESSAY The Statement of Purpose essay is an important factor in the selection of Gilman Scholarship recipients. We strongly encourage you to read the Gilman Selection Criteria, carefully review your essay, and ask an advisor, faculty member, or others to proofread your essay for spelling, grammar, and content prior to submission. In your essay, be specific in describing your individual reasons for studying abroad, keeping in mind that this is a scholarship for academic study abroad or credit bearing international internships. Please address ALL of the questions below, in no particular order: (max of 7,000 characters) How will studying or interning abroad help you achieve your future academic or professional goals? Why did you select your specific program and host country? How are you academically prepared to be a successful scholar abroad? If you have faced significant academic difficulties, tell us about those and how you are overcoming them. What examples of knowledge, skills, and experiences will you draw on to meet the challenges of going abroad?
QUESTIONSTO HELPYOU WRITE ESSAY 1 Why do you wish to study abroad and what factors led you to this decision? What do you hope to gain from it? What do you anticipate will be the impact of your experience abroad? What impact will your choice of country have on your experience abroad? What initially inspired you to want to study abroad in this particular country or learn this language? Describe your study abroad program.What factors led you to select this program and length of study?
QUESTIONSTO HELPYOU WRITE ESSAY 1 How will this study or intern abroad program and the coursework you take abroad impact your academic and future professional goals? Are there any distinctive components to this program, beyond coursework, that will impact your overall learning experience abroad? (i.e. home-stays, internships, field research, volunteer activities, extra-curricular activities, etc.) How did you meet these challenges? What challenges, if any, did you face in your decision to study abroad? What impact do you foresee them having on your experience abroad? These could include, but are not limited to, being a parent, being a non-traditional student, having a learning or physical disability, being in a field of study for which it is difficult to incorporate study abroad, etc.
ESSAY 2: BUILDING MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING Gilman Scholars represent the United States as citizen diplomats in their host communities; they reflect a diversity of values, beliefs, and opinions that is fundamental to providing a balanced representation of the United States abroad. Gilman Scholars are expected to contribute to the goal of building mutual understanding by sharing what it means to be an American, learning about the host culture, and building meaningful relationships. (max of 3000 characters) As a U.S. citizen, how will you represent and share what it means to be an American during your program? How will you seek opportunities to become more culturally engaged and have meaningful interactions with people and cultures different from your own during your abroad program?
QUESTIONSTO HELPYOUWITH ESSAY 2 How will you represent the United States as a citizen diplomat while abroad? How will you contribute to the goal of mutual understanding?
ESSAY 3: FOLLOW ON SERVICE PROJECT Gilman Scholars are expected to complete the Follow-on Service Project which is to increase awareness of study abroad and the Gilman Scholarship among their peers in their home or campus communities. (max of 3000 characters) In no particular order, describe your Follow-on Service Project in more detail: What is your project and how will it increase awareness of study abroad and the Gilman Program among your peers in your home or campus community? Identify and explain why you chose the specific community you will be reaching. How will you integrate the impact of your experience abroad into your project? With which campus departments, student organizations, or community organizations will you collaborate?
QUESTIONSTO HELPYOU WRITE ESSAY 3 How will this project impact your home university or home community?What are your project goals? What is your target population and how will your project impact this group?? How will you integrate the impact of your experiences abroad into your project?? What, if any, campus departments, student organizations, and/or community organizations will you collaborate with in promoting the Gilman Scholarship and international education? Have you already made contact with these groups?? ? Briefly outline your proposed project to promote the Gilman Scholarship and international education.
FOR ALL ESSAYS Each essay has limitations to characters and spaces. 7, 000 characters (essay #1) ends up being about 1.5 pages, single spaced. 3,000 characters will be about 遜 a page. Be concise! Dont do any exciting formatting. It will be eliminated anyway when you upload the essay. These are essays! They need thesis statements, paragraph structure, evidence, and excellent grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Go to the Writing Center for help! Come see me! Let me look at drafts! Also, the faculty going on your programs are all expert writers. You can see them. Proofread!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OTHERTIPS https://www.gilmanscholarship.org/applican ts/tips/ Transcripts are usually an issue. How do you upload them? Look at the website above for advice. Im the Academic Advisor. Jose Alcaraz is the Financial Aid Advisor. At Cypress, there should only be one name for theAcademic Advisor and one for the Financial Aid Advisor. Just click on those names. For total cost: Use $9000 for semester and $5000 for summer.
