Madhya Pradesh has a primarily agricultural economy, with around 73% of the population living in rural areas and depending directly or indirectly on agriculture. Major crops include rice, wheat, soybeans, sugarcane, and cotton. The state achieved the highest agricultural growth in India in both 2012-13 and 2013, at rates of 18.91% and 13.33% respectively. The government is focusing on developing the food processing sector and improving infrastructure for post-harvest management and marketing to add value to agricultural output and strengthen the economy.
3. Madhya Pradesh is known as the Heart of India. It is the second
largest state by area and sixth largest state by population.
Agriculture of Madhya Pradesh is one of the main
sectors of the states economy. Madhya Pradesh is primarily
an agriculture state. About 73 percent population of the state
is rural, which directly or indirectly depends on the agriculture.
Agriculture plays an important role by contributing immensely
to the economy.
The major perennial rivers of Madhya Pradesh namely
Narmada River, Betwa River, Chambal River originate in
Madhya Pradesh and flow to the seven bordering states. The
soil of Madhya Pradesh is deficient in nitrogen and phosphate
nutrients, The natural calamities like drought floods and
hailstorm are the common features that affect agriculture in
Madhya Pradesh

11. In spite of being the 2nd leading State in the areas of fruits &
vegetables in India, the food-processing sector in Madhya Pradesh is
relatively un-developed. Now it is being treated as a thrust sector in
the New Industrial Policy and various concessions & incentives have
been provided for this sector. Investment proposals for more than Rs.
200 crore are in the offing. Many proposals for organic farming and
production and herbal products have been received.
In the year 2003-2004 Government of India has sanctioned six
"Agriculture Export Zones" (AEZ) for six agro products in Madhya
Pradesh. This initiative would strengthen the infrastructure in Food
Processing.
The M.P. villages are well connected by ITC-E chaupal model and
contract farming is being done by corporate sector. Notable among
them is Pepsi, which is doing contract farming in 10000 ha of land in
Ujjain division for potato farming (Chip variety).

17. Madhya Pradesh has again posted the highest
agriculture growth in the country this year.
According to the governments claim, the state
achieved a growth rate of 13.33% in 2013
Last year, the agriculture growth, however, was
pegged at 18.91%. The government considers the
back-to-back highest agriculture growth achieved
by the state as a rare feat in the country.
According to an official release, the state produced
2.31 crore metric tonnes food grains in 2012-13
against 2.03 crore MT in 2011-12.
With this, Madhya Pradesh surpassed Haryana in
food grain production and now stands third after
Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
