NEURONS
HISTORY OF NEURONS:
It was first
discovered by a famous scientist
Santiago Ramon in year 1888.
1
2
Santiago was born in Spain in 1852 and died in
1934.
Neurons:
is the basic functional and
structural unit of the nervous system .
 Also known as Nerve Cell.
 Carries Electric Impulses.

Structure Of Neuron
4
Structure Of Neuron:
Consists of the
following parts;
 CELL BODY.
 DENDRON.
 AXON.
5
CELL BODY:
It consists of cytoplasm,
Nucleus and other cell organelles.
Its function is to collect information
from dendrites.
6
Dendron:
They basically arise from cell
body.
7
One or more short processes of
dendron are called Dendrites.
Its function is to bring impulses
towards the cell body.
8
Axon:
It is single long fiber that arises
from the cell body. (as shown in the
diagram.)
9
Axons of large neurons is covered by a
white sheath called Myelin Sheath.
The distance between two nodes is
called Schwann cell.(as shown in the
diagram.)
10
Axons function is to receive nerve
impulse from the cell body
11
Types Of Neurons:
There are three
types of neurons.
 Sensory Neurons.
 Motor Neurons.
 Associative Neurons.
12
 SENSORY NEURON:
It carry nerve impulse
from the receptor (sense organs) to CNS.
 MOTOR NEURON:
It carries nerve impulse
from the CNS to the effectors (muscles and
glands)

 ASSOCIATIVE NEURON:
They are
present in brain and spinal cord. They
link the sensory neurons with motor
neurons.
