Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Ayo received a full athletic scholarship to attend Rider University, Lawrenceville, New Jersey, a Division I institution in the United States of America.
As an active athlete in the school, Ayo broke the school record in the 500 meter dash (a 7-year record that stands till today), was a three-time MAAC champion in the 400 meter dash, was part of the three-time 4 by 400 meter dash championship team and record breaking 4 by 800 meter dash.
