The current territory of Burkina Faso has been occupied since 500 years B.C. The first French
exploration dates back to 1888.

In 1919, the Republic of Upper Volta (currently Burkina Faso) became a French oversea territory
before being dismantled in 1932 and split up among neighboring colonies such as Niger, French
Sudan, and Ivory Coast. On September 4th, 1947, the colony was revived and the territory of the
Republic of Upper Volta re-established with its previous boundaries of 1919.

After gaining independence from France in 1960, the country underwent many governmental
changes until arriving at its current form, a semi-presidential republic. On 4th August 1984, the
Republic of Upper Volta changed its
name and became officially Burkina
Faso.

Burkina means: integrity, honesty,
dignity, honor. Faso means: country,
state. Republic. Burkina Faso
means : The Country of Honorable
People. The current president is
Blaise Compaoré.
Burkina Faso has significant
reserves of gold, but cotton is the economic mainstay for many Burkinabes. This industry is
vulnerable to changes in world prices.

Some basic information about Sandeba:

- The centre houses 100 children aged between 0 and 20 years old.
–There are only four dedicated volunteers people to care for the children.

–The orphanage is one of the most populated but also the most underfunded in the country, they
need everything.

For example, the centre uses 25 kilos of rice and 50 litres of water daily.

–Three buildings with bed rooms, bathrooms, a kitchen and a
canteen.

–They have access to running water but it is undrinkable because
of bacteria and parasites.

–They also have some solar panels which provide two hours of electricity a day.

–The centre has a small school with three class rooms.

–There is also a small medical clinic which is mostly run by volunteers instead of a doctor.

The orphanage needs a regular income of 400 000 francs CFA (800 Euro) a month, in order to
provide the children with adequate nutrition, healthcare and education. If 50 people give 180
Euro a year, that is 15 Euro a month, the children's basic needs will be met.

Your contributions will go directly to help the children without any intermediate or administration
costs.

Your help will make a difference in these orphans lives.
