Barend started his career with BHP Billiton Manganese in Hotazel. After receiving a surface rock breaking certificate, a 18 month training programme for an underground hard rock at Goldfields Kloof mine, finishing the BHP Billiton foundation for Graduates programme, working as miner and setting various safe production records, he moved from the Kalahari closer to his wife and worked as a miner at Xstrata Elands Platinum mine in decline development.
Barend made a significant career change, leaving the production and mine management growth path in 2012 and started his consulting career.
