A scientific paper aims to accurately describe original research procedures and results in a way that allows others to evaluate and potentially replicate the study. The materials and methods section specifically enables this by providing enough detail on the materials, subjects, equipment, and steps taken in the experiment so that findings can be verified. Guidelines for effective materials and methods sections include briefly explaining the general scientific procedure used, describing all materials and equipment, and explaining the experimental steps taken without instructing the reader.

What is a Scientific Paper ?
 A scientific paper is a written report describing
original research results.
 Scientific papers are the main mechanisms by
which scientists communicate.
 There is little room in scientific writing for
creativity.

Objectives of Scientific Paper
 It must accurately describe the procedures

A paper is typically organized into
the following sections:
 Abstract
 Introduction
 Materials and Methods
 Results
 Discussions
Each section contains specific information
about the research being described.

Good Example
 Twenty-five µl of each sample were loaded
onto a 10% polyacrylamide gel and subjected
to electrophoresis for one hour at 120V.

Bad Examples
 Take 25 µl of each sample and load them on a
10% polyacrylamide gel.
 Next I would take 25 µl of each sample and load
them on a 10% gel.
  1. Load 25 µl of each sample on a 10%
polyacrylamide gel.
 2. Run the gel at 100 V for 30 minutes
 3. Transfer the gel to nitrocellulose for one hour
at 70V.

 25 µl of each of the 3 samples were then
loaded on a 10% polyacrylamide gel.
 Then we ran the proteins on a gel.
 Samples were subjected to electrophoresis on
a gel.

Checklist for Materials and

Iron oxide-hydroxide minerals in Martian dust provide crucial insights into Mars’ past climate and habitability. Previous studies attributed Mars’ red color to anhydrous hematite formed through recent weathering. Here, we show that poorly crystalline ferrihydrite (Fe5O8H · nH2O) is the dominant iron oxidebearing phase in Martian dust, based on combined analyses of orbital, in-situ, and laboratory visible near-infrared spectra. Spectroscopic analyses indicate that a hyperfine mixture of ferrihydrite, basalt and sulfate best matches Martian dust observations. Through laboratory experiments and kinetic calculations, we demonstrate that ferrihydrite remains stable under present-day Martian conditions, preserving its poorly crystalline structure. The persistence of ferrihydrite suggests it formed during a cold, wet period on early Mars under oxidative conditions, followed by a transition to the current hyper-arid environment. This finding challenges previous models of continuous dry oxidation and indicates that ancient Mars experienced aqueous alteration before transitioning to its current desert state.

Dynamically studying trans-Neptunian object (TNO) binaries allows us to measure masses and orbits. Most of the known objects appear to have only two components, except (47171) Lempo, which is the single known hierarchical triple system with three similar-mass components. Though hundreds of TNOs have been imaged with high-resolution telescopes, no other hierarchical triples (or trinaries) have been found among solar system small bodies, even though they are predicted in planetesimal formation models such as gravitational collapse after the streaming instability. By going beyond the point-mass assumption and modeling TNO orbits as non-Keplerian, we open a new window into the shapes and spins of the components, including the possible presence of unresolved “inner” binaries. Here we present evidence for a new hierarchical triple, (148780) Altjira (2001 UQ18), based on non-Keplerian dynamical modeling of the two observed components. We incorporate two recent Hubble Space Telescope observations, leading to a 17 yr observational baseline. We present a new open-source Bayesian pointspread function fitting code called nPSF that provides precise relative astrometry and uncertainties for single images. Our non-Keplerian analysis measures a statistically significant (∼2.5σ) nonspherical shape for Altjira. SUMMARY Based on human relationship with bacteria, virulence is one of the most important case to us. Some forms of virulence thought to arise only from the actions of bacteria are not actually caused by them but are indirectly influenced by another counterpart in the microbial mix of the ecosystem called bacteriophage; viruses that only infect prokaryotes such as bacteria but not eukaryotes. Bacteriophages preferably attack bacteria due to the lack of specific receptors for phages on eukaryotic cells which are found in bacteria e.g. peptide sequences and polysaccharide moieties in gram positive and gram negative bacteria, bacterial capsules, slime layers, flagella etc. They recognize and bind to bacteria using appropriate receptors, subsequently proceeding to inject their genome called prophage into their host. This review focuses on the most probable outcomes of phage-host interactions via the lytic and lysogenic cycles which are therapeutic effect and pathogenicity/resistance to antibiotics respectively. By lysogenic conversion or transfer of acquired genetic materials via transduction, phages can confer unusual traits such as virulence and antibiotics resistance. Important pathogenic bacteria that cause persistent and critical infections which have their pathogenicity engineered by phages include Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli, Vibrio cholerae, Staphylococcus spp., and Clostridium spp. The prophages influence their virulence in a variety of ways which include: contribution to the production of phage-encoded toxins, modification of the bacterial envelope, mediation of bacterial infectivity, and control of bacterial cell regulation. The unwavering threat of antimicrobial resistance in global health, extreme difficulty involved in developing novel antibiotics, and the rate at which microorganisms develop resistance to newly introduced antimicrobials have sparked urgency and interest in research for effective methods to eradicate pathogenic bacteria and limit antibiotic resistance. As a result, interest in phage therapy has been reignited because of the high efficiency in detecting and killing pathogenic bacteria by phages.

Eleni provided an overview of the application we developed to facilitate the preparation of ultrasound images, acquired via the ThrombUS+ clinical study A, for the purpose of developing AI models for automated detection of deep vein thrombosis. About ThrombUS+: Our interdisciplinary approach centers around creating a novel wearable diagnostic device utilizing autonomous, AI-driven DVT detection. This groundbreaking device incorporates wearable ultrasound hardware, impedance plethysmography, and light reflection rheography for early clot detection. Activity and physiological measurements will continuously assess DVT risk, supporting prevention through serious gaming. An intelligent decision support unit will provide real-time monitoring and alerts, with extended reality guiding users for optimal device utilization. 2. What is a Scientific Paper ?  A scientific paper is a written report describing original research results.  Scientific papers are the main mechanisms by which scientists communicate.  There is little room in scientific writing for creativity.

3. Objectives of Scientific Paper  It must accurately describe the procedures  It must place these results in a perspective

4. A paper is typically organized into the following sections:  Abstract  Introduction  Materials and Methods  Results  Discussions Each section contains specific information about the research being described.

5. Materials and Methods  Enable readers to evaluate the work performed  Permit others to replicate your study  Ensure that enough details is provided to verify your findings  Maintain a balance between brevity and completeness

6. Guidelines for effective methods in scientific reports Questions to address: How to address them: How did you study the problem ? Briefly explain the general type of scientific procedure you used. What did you use ? Describe what materials, subjects, and equipments you used. How did you proceed ? Explain the steps you took in your experiment.

7. Good Example  Twenty-five µl of each sample were loaded onto a 10% polyacrylamide gel and subjected to electrophoresis for one hour at 120V.

8. Bad Examples  Take 25 µl of each sample and load them on a 10% polyacrylamide gel.  Next I would take 25 µl of each sample and load them on a 10% gel.   1. Load 25 µl of each sample on a 10% polyacrylamide gel.  2. Run the gel at 100 V for 30 minutes  3. Transfer the gel to nitrocellulose for one hour at 70V.

9.  25 µl of each of the 3 samples were then loaded on a 10% polyacrylamide gel.  Then we ran the proteins on a gel.  Samples were subjected to electrophoresis on a gel.
