Sometimes a "practical" person is taken to mean someone who uses common sense and doesn't think too hard about how to solve day-to-day problems.
I'd like to suggest that you think of "common sense" as the wisdom the community has in common (that is, how the community you belong to...including all humanity...thinks we should act toward each other).
In contrast, there is what we call "private logic," or your internal thinking that puts you first and everybody else last.
Acting with "common sense" is what we call "socially useful" in that it improves the human community.
