Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan and was originally called Mintonette. It was inspired by basketball. The first official volleyball league was the American Volleyball Professionals in 1983. Key events in volleyball history include it becoming an official sport in 1900, the introduction of spiking in 1916, and it becoming an Olympic sport in 1964. The international governing body, FIVB, was founded in 1947 and is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland. Current champions include Russia in the Olympics and World Cup and Poland in the World Championships.
