Mobile phones have proliferated in Africa, with 99% of Tanzanians within reach of a signal. This widespread connectivity has enabled new forms of mobile activism, including monitoring elections, campaigning against domestic violence, and organizing protests. Mobile phones allow Africans to participate in the public sphere like never before by receiving information, documenting issues, publishing their views, and networking with others. However, governments also monitor phones and mobile activism faces challenges from high costs, disparities in infrastructure, and lack of net neutrality.
