As a professional educator, I teach and advocate critical thinking, classical argumentation, and discussions of texts based on close reading.
As I see it, texts have no meaning in and of themselves. We readers fill in gaps of meaning, even when we engage in close reading. By definition, close reading is an act of textual criticism, even if it is very basic interpretation (e.g. plot, thesis statement, purpose, etc.) Moreover, texts and all of their linguistics components hold a potential for myriad meanings. As part of the dialogic dynamic of readers negotiating filling in gaps of meaning, readers ultimately make the meaning in the text.
