Dan graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1978, where he played football for coach Frosty Westering and received a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. While he completed his education, he also worked part-time as a Youth Director at a local church.
Following graduation, Dan worked full time as a Youth Director for a larger church in Eastern Washington until entering Luther-Northwestern Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He returned to the Pacific Northwest and continued working in youth programming and fund raising for the next several years.
