In an effort to promote the integration of noninvasive electrophysiological methods into marine mammal cognition research, I have developed a new tool—the Ring-Cap and Tail—for recording electrophysiological data using multi-electrode arrays resting on alert dolphins for brief, unobtrusive periods of time and a new technique—the Directional Electrode Placement System (DEPS)—for rapidly identifying and effectively reporting the relative placement of multiple recording channels, irrespective of subject size variation.
