Sometimes, sties resolve themselves on their own or with basic, at-home treatment methods as recommended by a doctor. For instance, a doctor might advise a person to place a warm compress against the closed eye periodically throughout the day to reduce pain and swelling and encourage the inflammation to drain. Over time, the sty will often come to a head and break open with this approach. Other types of sties, however, may present more of a problem. This is often the case if the sty is located on the underside of the eyelid. These internal sties can sometimes form a cyst that a doctor needs to drain. Other treatments for troublesome sties might include antibiotics administered either to the area or in oral form. If a person has a sty, it¡¯s often a good idea to see a doctor for evaluation and a recommended treatment plan.
