In the beginning we were hunting game across the icy straights of Europe, when these melted and the sea rose we became an island. Our ancestors left no remnants except flint axes, no stomach contents for forensic analysis.
With boats and bold ambition we sailed in from Rome to rule Britannia - for four centuries. We brought motorways, steam rooms, sparkling wines and African soldiers. From Holland and Germany we came as poor farmers in search of arable land: Angelin, Saxony, Jutland, Frisia ... our language became the basis for English.
