Student Mag E P P I N G F O R E S T C O L L E G E Wishing all Students and staff a Happy and Safe Summer We wish every one of you lots of success and happiness, whether you are continuing with your studies here, or leaving to start a new chapter in your life. - 2. Staff from the Guide Dogs for the Blind came to College again recently to train Health and Social Care students. The training taught students a few simple sighted guiding techniques, which means they will feel ready and confident to help blind and partially sighted people if needed. The 2遜 hour practical session showed the difficulties of going up or down stairs and steps, getting through door- ways and taking a seat. For more information please visit: www.guidedogs.org.uk Jemima Panda, Sarah Aryeh, Stephanie Sloughly, Chloe Prentice Enrichment Activity On Saturday (yes Saturday!) 25th May, the following students completed the Emergency First Aid at Work, an ac- credited 6 hour course:- Menelik Ekani-Robinson (Sport) Billie Johnson (Childcare) Zakariah Khan (Childcare) Sathurna Satgunarajah (Art & Design) Andrew Steadman (Sport) Farihah Ullah (Art & Design) They all enjoyed and benefitted from the course and interacted well with each other, and particularly liked practising bandaging and resuscita- tion techniques on each other. They all agreed that the course was very interesting; well worth coming in during the weekend for, and, as Zachariah (Zach) commented, you learn so much from this. - 3. I took the Life and Living Skills to the Lee Valley Boat Centre to drive motorboats on the river Lee at Broxbourne. We had a fantastic time in the glorious sunshine. We got to see lots of wildlife. The students were great and learned about boating etiquette and how to be safe on the river and around water. By Kathryn Lowe Alex Munro, Ryan Branch, Ryan Lowe, Zoe Sheret, Matthew Brown, Lee Ewin, and Louis South Sinan Sahin and Jaysharee Kakkad from the Department for Works and Pensions (the Job Centre) visited the college to give talks to three groups of Level 2 Secretarial students and Health and Social Care students about the world of work. They began by talking about choices available to young people after finishing school , going on to university; seeking apprenticeships; choosing to volunteer or doing paid work. They advised students of good job-seeking sources, such as the Internet and recruitment, and they gave tips on speculating job opportunities. Students took away with them a comprehensive list of useful job search websites. They also emphasised the importance of maintaining a CV relevant to every job applied for. The students that attended the talk completed evaluation forms. They all agreed that the presenter kept them interested in the topic; that it was a good use of their time and that they learnt something from the talk. Shai won the competi- tion and was awarded 贈10 and Kristian came second his prize was 贈5. - 5. O n Monday the 20th May, for an end-of-term treat, 30 students, from different courses, went on a coach trip, organised by Enrichment, to Thorpe Park. A bonus to the day was that it didnt rain! The students agreed that they enjoyed the trip they were glad that they didnt have to queue up long for the rides; some students had a chance to be thrilled by Saw, Colos- sus and Nemesis twice. Brave souls! All credit to the students for being such a great group. Their good nature, (even while waiting for the coach that was half an hour late!) and behaviour were a credit to the college. Food Safety Twenty students from L3 Travel and Tourism, took the Food Safety course, accredited by RSPH (Royal Society for the Promotion of Health). The course is ideal for anyone working, or thinking of working, in a restaurant or caf辿. It covers food hygiene; risk assessment; moving and handling food, fire safety and noise. The course involves 4 hours tuition and a short exam afterwards. All the students enjoyed the course and passed. As the Food Safety qualifi- cation is recognised nationally, it would enhance your CV and could improve your career prospects! Enrichment Activity
