This document discusses the movement of food through the esophagus. The chewed food moves from the mouth to the pharynx and then into the esophagus. The uvula and epiglottis prevent food from entering the nasal cavity and trachea, respectively. Contraction of involuntary muscles in the esophagus moves food unidirectionally down toward the stomach. The esophagus is surrounded by the upper and lower esophageal sphincters, which act to close the esophagus when food is not being swallowed. Food reaches the stomach in 8 seconds, where digestion is completed within 4-5 hours.
