He was the youngest among the five siblings of Emma Melocoton and Edwin Gustilo (both Ilonggos-Iloilo and Bacolod). Born in Sta. Ana Manila. Studied at Margarita Roxas de Ayala in Elementary, Mariano Marcos Memorial in high school and City College of Manila in college.
He became a volunteer catechist of Parish of Our Lady of the Abandoned from 1999-2004. In this time he became attracted to the Franciscan charism --- St. Francis of Assisi, so he joined the Franciscan Youth (YOUFRA) in 2000 then ni Secular Franciscan Order/Ordo Franciscanus Saecularis (OFS) and became candidate in 2004. After years of on and off formations in the Order, he was finally professed in the OFS last June 5, 2010.
