Bonfire Night is celebrated on November 5th in remembrance of Guy Fawkes and the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Key elements of the celebration include lighting bonfires, burning effigies of Guy Fawkes called "Guys", and setting off fantastic fireworks. The tradition originated from Catholic conspirators' failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I in order to end persecution of Catholics in England.
