Unemployment in Scotland increased by almost 20% in the last three months, which is twice the rate of increase in England. The number of unemployed Scots rose by 31,000 people, bringing the total to 188,000 unemployed, a rise of 75,000 people in the last 12 months. Youth unemployment among those under 25 years old rose sharply from 700,000 in February 2008 to 928,000 in June 2009, with nearly one in five 16-24 year olds seeking work now unemployed.
