The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands located in Southeast Asia, between 116属 and 126属30' east longitude and 4属23' and 21属25' north latitude. It lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire and is prone to earthquakes and tropical storms. The islands extend over 1,770 km from north to south in a roughly triangular shape, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the South China Sea to the west, the Bashi Channel to the north, and the Celebes Sea to the south. The Philippine Trench, which reaches depths of over 10,000 m, runs along the eastern coastline.
