DCMI Keynote: Bridging the Semantic Gaps and InteroperabilityMike Bergman
油
M. Bergman's presentation, 'Bridging the Gaps: Adaptive Approaches to Data Interoperabiity,' was a keynote at the DCMI's DC 2010 International Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, on October 22, 2010.
In the presentation, Bergman points to the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative as a unique and key player in plugging the semantics "gap" within the semantic Web. Some specific activities and roles are suggested.
A presentation I did at SXSW Interactive 2008 on the contextual web which talks about context, UCD, UX, and more. It mostly focuses on the mobile web and iphone design but there are some other interfaces it explores.
The document discusses file system implementation and structure. It covers topics like directory implementation using linear lists and hash tables, different allocation methods like contiguous, linked and indexed allocation, free space management using bit vectors and linked lists, improving efficiency through caching, and recovery methods like consistency checking and log-structured file systems. It also provides an overview of the Sun Network File System (NFS) including its architecture, mount protocol, and remote operations.
This document provides an overview of distributed file systems (DFS), including naming and transparency, remote file access, caching techniques, and example systems such as the Andrew file system. Some key points are:
- A DFS manages dispersed storage devices across a network to provide a shared file space for multiple users. It provides location transparency so file locations are hidden from clients.
- Caching is used to improve performance of remote file access by retaining frequently used data locally. Consistency must be maintained between cached and master copies.
- Systems can use stateful or stateless file service. Stateful requires maintaining client session data while stateless makes each request self-contained.
- The Andrew file system example illustrates
The document provides an overview of routing protocols and IP addressing concepts. It discusses MAC addresses, IP addressing including classes and subnetting, IPX addressing, and routing fundamentals such as forwarding tables, convergence, metrics, and routing protocols. Specific protocols covered include RIP, with details on distance vector routing. The overall agenda is to introduce IP and IPX addressing, generic routing concepts, specific routing protocols, and static and default routes.
This document provides tips for being heard in meetings and conversations by addressing common problems such as not having space to speak, talking too fast, others stealing your ideas, ideas being dismissed, and not getting credit for your work. It suggests tactics like using "breathing space" between sentences when talking fast, pointing out when others take your ideas and expanding on them, demanding reasons when ideas are dismissed, providing explanations for your ideas if you lack experience, and summarizing your work and accomplishments. The overall goal is to advocate for yourself and your ideas in professional settings.
The document discusses the new architecture of media and outlines several key points:
1) Content should be separated from presentation and be able to be adapted and distributed across different platforms like RSS and mobile.
2) Links are important for curation and collaboration, allowing readers to distribute content and structure stories across multiple pages.
3) Search optimization is important for navigation, and search engines like Google have become the dominant way people find information online.
4) Aggregation, widgets, modules and distributed content allow the audience to become part of a network and further erode brands as standalone destinations.

Utilizing Open Government Data Using Drupalccalnan
油
This document summarizes a presentation about utilizing open government data using Drupal. It discusses how the CKAN and OGDI modules allow Drupal sites to integrate and display open data from sources like data.gov and data.gov.uk. The presentation provides an overview of how these modules work, examples of what open data initiatives have been built with Drupal, and next steps to continue improving the integration of open data into Drupal.
This document discusses how people have become the new media in today's socially connected world. It notes that audiences are now active rather than captive, and form peer connections over brand connections. It advocates that brands engage in social media by studying the space, listening to conversations, publishing engaging content, interacting with audiences, influencing key social media users, and activating audiences to inspire real-world actions. The document provides examples of how brands have successfully engaged audiences and generated business results through social media campaigns.
M-learning uses mobile technologies like phones, PDAs, and laptops to administer education. It can provide a bridge between teaching methods, complement existing education, and expand audiences by taking learning to the learner. Benefits include accessible self-paced learning in a private environment, while challenges include lack of face-to-face interaction and understanding limitations. Recommendations are to use m-learning for distance learning, with mobile users, and for non-complex learning transference or memo broadcasting.
Queen Elizabeth I was born in 1533 in Greenwich Palace along the Thames river. She was the daughter of King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth spoke six languages fluently as a youth and ascended to the English throne on March 17, 1558, becoming one of the most successful monarchs in English history through her long reign from 1558 to 1603. She received no formal awards during her lifetime.
The document discusses the issues of poverty globally and in the United States. It notes that over 1 billion people live on less than $1 per day and 2.7 billion live on less than $2 per day. In the US, the poverty rate in 2006 was 12.3% representing 36.5 million people. While revolution is one way to address poverty, the document advocates for more constructive solutions like donating time and resources to local shelters, reducing food waste, and engaging in politics.
The document summarizes a public engagement experiment that aimed to enable school students and teachers to collaborate with scientists on science experiments. Participants used mobile phones to capture data and share it online. They found capturing experiment data and designs using mobile phones worked well. Video conferencing with an expert also engaged participants. However, writing reports for a blog was less successful and alternative reporting methods like video or text messages may work better. The experiment highlighted the importance of mobile connectivity and motivating reflection and reporting on experiments.
Joan of Arc was a French heroine born in 1412 in Domremy who, despite no formal education and inability to read or write, led the French army to victory over the English at Orleans and was later canonized as a Roman Catholic saint.

#3: so, what does this part of the talk have to do with todays theme: “Social Media & Networks?”\n\nby living as an open scholar, I’m able to connect with a far larger number and greater range of colleagues (and potential colleagues) and students. My work has much greater reach and impact.\n
#4: what has worked for me - what hasn’t, etc. \n
#5: When I say “open,” what exactly do I mean?\n
#6: by silos, I mean that I do my best not to put my intellectual work (research & course material) into systems that that are only accessible by a small, privileged number of people\n
#7: do my best to choose tools, platforms, services, and communities that play nice with the open web\n
#8: For me, advocacy plays a central role in “Open Scholarship”\n\nAimee Morrison of the University of Waterloo very eloquently says that we shouldn’t “seek a converts, but we should seek a conversation”\n
#10: much of the resistance comes from from faculty and administrators within the academy. \n\nDon’t want to suggest that this is a generational issue - it isn’t. Some of the strongest supporters of “open” (at this university and beyond) are respected senior scholars. \n
#11: its important to note here that I ascribe to a grass roots, bottom up, DIY/Hacking approach to open scholarship\n\nThe idea being you shouldn’t wait for an institutional level initiative or blessing to do this stuff. If you want to do it, go and do it. \n
#13: When I say “open classroom” - I don’t mean this. \n
#14: Instead, its a model I’ve developed for all of my own classes - that (generally speaking) has three aspects\n
#15: The first aspect of the open classroom model is open courseware\n
#16: all of my classes are open and outward facing - open to anyone who is interested in viewing the content\n\nAll live outside of the ANGEL ecosystem (which leads to the next aspect of the Open Classroom)\n
#24: In my opinion, the ultimate goal of Twitter is to humanize professors\n\nessentially moving you “from here” “to here”\n\nstudies show that students who have a strong connection with their professors have higher academic success rates\n
#25: While the one of the core principles of OCW is a creative commons license, I’ve got one step further.\n\nHave students set the CC license for each of their posts.\n\nThis lets them exert more granular control about how they want their content to be used.\n\nAlso challenges them to think about open access in general and CC in particular.\n
#28: My publications have far more reach (and arguably impact) when I do my best to ensure that they don’t live in an ecosystem that is only accessible by a small, exclusive group of people. \n
#29: In many ways, Twitter is the lubricant that facilitates my personal belief in open scholarly communication and discourse. \n
#30: It allows me to connect with a greater number and range of scholars - people who I would probably never meet (because of geography or discipline).\n\nfacilitates the sharing of information and ideas - which not only benefits the conversation participants, but everyone else who is “listening in.”\n
#31: like any good model - this one is constantly evolving\n\nthere are lots of issues (technical, epistemological, practical, logistical, legal) that always need to be addressed\n\n\n
#33: ultimately, however, its all about taking a leap - \n\nbreaking from practice that you might have become very accustomed to.\n\nnot everything is going to work (both from a technical and a pedagogical standpoint\n\nIn many ways, the act of doing is just as important as the success or the failure of what you build\n\n\n
