George Gerbner developed cultivation theory while earning his master's degree and PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. Born in Hungary in 1919, Gerbner served in the US Army and studied journalism and education, receiving his master's from USC and focusing his thesis on "Television and Education." His cultivation theory examined the long-term effects of television on viewers' perceptions of reality.
