Gerald Nelson received his PhD from Stanford University in 1982. Since that time he has served as the Agricultural Development Council representative at the University of the Philippines, Los Banos from 1982-85, and as assistant, associate and full professor in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign from 1985 to 2008.
