Known as 鈥淜assaman鈥� (鈥漈he Pledge鈥�), the Algerian national anthem was written by Mufdi Zakariah while he was a prisoner of French colonial forces, and later set to music by Egyptian composer Mohamed Fawzi and adopted as the national anthem in 1963, soon after Algerian achieved independence from France, a theme very strongly represented in the lyrics.
