Born and raised in Hong Kong; Harkim migrated to U.S. as a teenager to study art and design. At the age of 23, he received a M.F.A. in painting and printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design. He was also the sole recipient of an exchange fellowship at Brown University during the second year of the master degree program.
With the art market crash in the 90s, his dream of chilling with Julian Schnabel and living in NYC as an artist shattered.
