This unit plan is designed to teach second graders the elements of a fairy tale. It also
incorporates some basic elements of a story such as character, setting plot, etc. It lines up with
some of the West Virginia standards for second grade language arts. It explores the stories of
Jack and the Bean Stock, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, and Cinderella. The unit
plan also incorporates many elements of technology to help students learn the material.
The technologies used are Smart Board, ELMO, computers, blogs and social media. This
unit plan also takes help from the students’ parents who have to have a Facebook and Twitter
account along with the Zello app on their phones. The students also have to create a robot using
basic hard drives and instruction. This is to challenge them creatively and also add some basic
STEM into their day.
This unit plan teaches character, setting, plot, theme, and character traits to the students.
It is designed so that students can read any fairy tale and determine the basic elements that are in
all stories. They will watch YouTube videos to learn about the elements of a story and a fairy
tale. They will also watch a YouTube video read aloud of one of the stories. They will work
individually and in groups to accomplish tasks.
