John Wood, born in 1964 in Hartford, Connecticut, was an executive at Microsoft before a life-changing trip to Nepal inspired him to focus on education. After discovering the lack of resources for Nepalese children, he co-founded Room to Read in 2001, an organization aimed at promoting literacy and gender equality in education. As of July 2012, Room to Read has established over 1,600 schools, distributed 11 million books, and benefitted 6 million children.
