Medieval fencing was a martial art practiced by knights using blades as weapons like swords. It was the precursor to modern fencing and taught in fencing schools across countries. Knights needed swords, armor, and small shields called broquels to practice fencing techniques which involved blade combat training for warfare. The authors chose to research medieval fencing because while it influenced current fencing, few details are widely known about the medieval version of the sport.
