After doing our preliminary task a few months before our actual thriller project we can see a massive difference and actually notice how much this exercise helped us with the most important camerawork techniques and editing techniques we needed knowledge for. After editing and recording this we become aware of mistakes being made which meant that when we come to filming our actual film we was able to not make these mistakes again. Match on action, the 180 degree rule and shot reverse shot are all shot that we also used in our thriller opening as well as our preliminary task. This was done without even realising as we already had the knowledge on what they were, how to use them and what the effects of them were. Below we have two screen shots of both the thriller movie and the prelim task. We made sure that the 180 degree rule was used through-out the whole of both of them. This is because it is vital if you do not want your audience to become confused if they aren’t familiar with the location. It makes the audience aware of the setting, making it easier for them to read the scene. This could also lead to making the audience engage more with the film. We improved from our preliminary task to our thriller opening because the shots were much cleaner. We didn’t have to re do the shots as many times as we did for our preliminary and we understood the meaning of it so we done it automatically. Below there are 4 screen shots from both again the preliminary task and thriller opening of match on action. This is important to films because match on action creates continuity between shots. This shot is most popular when walking around corners or going through doors. This is just like our examples below. Not only does this create continuity but it makes the shot more interesting and it makes it make more sense. We improved our match on action from our preliminary task to our thriller opening for the exact same reasons as the 180 degree rule. We knew what match on action was so it came automatically to us.
- 2. We also have shot reverse shot in both our preliminary task and thriller film opening. Shot reverse shot is most popular to be used during a conversation typically between two people. This makes the audience more aware of who is talking at one time. This could also mean it is clearer for the audience as they only have to concentrate on one person too. Doing the preliminary task before we filmed our thriller opening project helped us improve on our camera techniques as we learned from our mistakes that we noticed from our preliminary task. Furthermore this also helped us with our basic editing skills e.g. fast/slow pace editing; cutting shots etc. This is because we already knew how to use the editing software. This ensured when it came to editing our thriller opening it took less time and was so much easier.
