Prairie Grille
Among the unique features of Prairie Grille is a collection
of photographs taken by famous LIFE magazine
photographer Gordon Parks. In 1955, LIFE featured a farm
family in Tama County, Iowa, in an issue exploring the role
of American agriculture and food production in the nation’s
economy. Parks was the photographer. The featured
family was that of Denise Bruene Baker, the wife of Bart T.
Baker, co-owner of BEST WESTERN PLUS SteepleGate Inn
and Prairie Grille Restaurant.
Parks’ black and white photos helped inspire the name
Prairie Grille and formed the basis for the entire concept.
The collection includes dramatic portraits of the Bruene
farmers, their life, and the legacy they share with many
other Midwesterners.
BEST WESTERN PLUS SteepleGate Inn was built in 1985 by Bart T. and Hamp Baker.
Their parents founded the Best Western Frontier, in Clinton, Iowa. The Frontier
Hospitality Group, which includes Dan Huber, owns and operates the BEST
WESTERN PLUS SteepleGate Inn as well as the BEST WESTERN PLUS Dubuque
Hotel and Conference Center and Champps Americana in Dubuque, Iowa, and the
Holiday Inn Express, Moline, Illinois.
