1967-1970: Millwright apprentice (Iscor).
1971-1972: Study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pretoria.
1973-1979: Assistant Resident Engineer at Thabazimbi Iron Ore mine. Responsible for the maintenance of all the different areas of the mine during subsequent periods.
1979-1982: Resident Engineer of Sasol's Sigma Colliery. Responsible for all maintenance activities, supply of services, surface operations, all project engineering.
1982-1985: Responsible for all mechanical maintenance of the Sasol I plant.
1985-1987: Headed the project team that designed and chose a maintenance information system for the Sasol Group of companies.
