My doctorate is in mathematics (my thesis adviser worked for Wernher von Braun at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center), and I have always worked in advanced scientific computing. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory was originally an Army activity, and my first job out of school was working at an Army research laboratory working on, and then overseeing, a project at JPL. My job allowed me to fund Marc Andreessen and his thesis adviser prior to the invention of the web browser, and other interesting projects. For those of you familiar with the movie "Wargames", I led the development of the software infrastructure for the system depicted in the movie. I also worked on the first drone program.
