Child labor remains a significant global issue, with an estimated 168 million children engaged in child labor worldwide. India has the second highest number of child laborers in the world, with approximately 10 million bonded children working as domestic servants and another 55 million bonded children in other industries. The Child Labor (Prohibition and Regulation) Act was implemented in India in 1986 to prohibit employment of children in hazardous occupations and processes and regulate the working conditions of children. Effective enforcement of laws against child labor and increased public support will be needed to better address this social issue.
