I joined the Nebraska National Guard in February 1989. A different time for Nebraska National Guard then it is now. I was 17 years old, a junior in High School.
For the first 12 years of my career, everything was pretty much how you would expect a National Guard career would go, one weekend a month, two weeks in the summer for Annual Training and maybe get called up for Tornado or Flood duty. If you were real lucky, you got to go the National Training Center.
In June 2001, I went on my first deployment, Kuwait. This was to be the first "real world" deployment for the 1-167th CAV. We were all doing our assigned mission on September 11th. None of us knew how much that day would change
