COMMUNICATIONS FOR
NON-COMMUNICATIONS PEOPLE
Jo Walters @jowalters
Communications Manager
Sussex Students' Union
ME.
Communications team of four
14,000 students at Sussex
I was an elected officer then worked in societies development
(This will look rubbish if I'm stood on the wrong side)
COMMUNICATIONS.
According to Google:
the imparting or exchanging
of information by speaking,
writing, or using some other
medium
a letter or message containing
information or news
the successful conveying or
sharing of ideas and feelings
social contact
TALKING
So it is
but also
LISTENING

Don't jump to a solution without checking
you're answering the right question
KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Seriously, you probably only
need 1/4 of the text you've
written. See how much less of
this slide you're reading than the
others. On the others I used key
phrases, bullet points, clear
headings and far far fewer
words. Don't try and put an
essay on a poster. No one is
going to read that. Seriously. I'm
bored already and I'm the one
who wrote this. Blah blah blah.
DON'T...
use jargon
talk to everyone
the same way
CONTENT MARKETING...
Permission-based
Relevant
Focused on their needs
CONTENT MARKETING...
Focus on what people want to know and what would be
useful for them, not what you want to tell people
FACEBOOK
Facebook looks for relevance and
other factors to decide whether or
not to show your posts in
someone's news feed
Facebook ads and boosting posts is
a cost-effective way to increase the
reach of your posts
WRITING ONLINE &
WRITING NEWS.
Ignore what they taught you at
school, it's end, middle,
beginning if you're writing news
People read differently online
so you need to adapt your
writing and layout
TOOLS.
Storify - curate tweets,
links, photos & info
PicMonkey - image editing
Canva - online design
Google Maps & BatchGeo
Hemingway app - improve
your writing
