Everyone is an author, producer, photographer, buyer, seller, gambler, gamer, critic, party planner, innovator, and reporter. There are NO barriers to entry!
AllIeverneededtoknowIlearnedfoundin Kindergarten ontheinternetKnowing how to find information in todays world is perhaps more important than actually knowing it.
Whatdoweneedtoknow? In A Study in Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes claims he does not know that the Earth revolves around the sun, as such information is irrelevant to his work. Directly after having heard that fact from Watson, he says he will immediately try to forget it. He says he believes that the mind has a finite capacity for information storage, and so learning useless things would merely reduce his ability to learn useful things. In the workforce, what we need to know and need to seek varies by individual. Having the right blend of expertise is key for any enterprise!

Editor's Notes

  1. Im speaking as an avid user of social media both inside AND outside the workplace. Cant stress enough that the two cannot be viewed in isolation. With that in mind, I want to get us on the same page, and in the right frame of mind, before diving into the tools and practices.
  2. Thought librarians would appreciate books, but if that doesnt drive it home.
  3. Everyone is an author, producer, photographer, buyer, seller, gambler, gamer, critic, party planner, innovator, and reporter. There are NO barriers to entry!
  4. Knowing how to find information in todays world is perhaps more important than actually knowing it.
  5. Living in inboxes. Maybe some file shares. If youre really out there you have a blackberry. And you hear about things like ROI and data security
  6. Try to live without it. This is about a more efficient way of working, something that enables a business to operate better. It is in support of your companys goals, not a goal itself!
  7. 20,000,000 to 1.
  8. Audit trail with alerts and rollback, a good editor, categories and cross linking with enterprise scale.
  9. Sharing knowledge that can be stored forever, not just raw information.
  10. So much I couldnt touch on, so many options.
