Alfred Eisenstaedt was a German-American photographer born in 1898 who is renowned for his candid photographs that captured spontaneous moments. He worked for Life magazine from 1936, pioneering candid portraits. Some of his most iconic photos include a VJ Day sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square in 1945, and Marilyn Monroe posing above a subway grate in 1953. Eisenstaedt believed in photographing reactions rather than staged events, and often ran alongside his subjects to get unexpected shots. He lived most of his life in New York and continued photographing until his death in 1995 at age 96.
