About
I was born in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. One of my grandfathers was a dairy farmer and the other was a mason. At age 18 I decided not to go to college and instead farm in an intentional community. My parents strongly encouraged me to enter college. From there my path has been a combination of practical learning and academic work in sustainable living.
I've studied natural farming in Japan, permaculture in Australia, and organic and biodynamic farming in the US.
I have a MSc in Sustainable Systems from Slippery Rock University (PA, USA) and a PhD in Bioresource Sciences from Nihon University (Japan), where I researched the hygrothermal environment of straw bale walls in Japan and building pra
