I've discovered that I wake up happy almost every day. Maybe I'm inspired by Sparky, my dog, who wakes up with a big yawn, then starts wagging his tail for no good reason but to be alive. Not bad! I'm a liberal with progressive tendencies. I tried to register as a Conscientious Objector with my draft board at age 17. They wouldn't talk to me. I refused to take the oath for Army ROTC which was required of most freshmen and sophomore males in those days. I served two years alternative service 1971-73 at age 19; worked in Appalachia for three years leading groups to do free home repair with local families in coal country - many homes with dirt floors.
