I hold dear the notion that the thinking person never complacently believes in ideas that have no evidence of any kind, even if they're appealing to one's feelings and values. New information must continually be factored into one's convictions so that revisions can easily be made. Of course, emotions can also be a valid source of information lending clues, but never the final word on the facts. Belief is not in such a person's vocabulary, but educated guesses, hypotheses, and likelihoods are.
