Alberto Santos Dumont was a Brazilian aviation pioneer born in 1873. He designed and flew the first dirigible in 1901, demonstrating controlled flight. On October 23, 1906, Santos Dumont flew his 14 Bis airplane, becoming the first person to fly an aircraft powered solely by its own engine. He committed suicide in 1932 after witnessing airplane use in a revolution, and is considered one of the most important figures of the 20th century for his contributions to aviation.

SANTOS DUMONT He was born in Palmira,MG in July 20 1873. He was an aviation pioneer. Son of rich family,who have farms in S達o Paulo countryside,he went to study in Paris,France.
Inventors He had designed,built and flew guided dirigible. He had demonstrated that was posible to control a flight. In 1901 he rounded the Eiffel Tower with his dirigible. With this he won an award,and became one of the most famous person in twentieth century.
He was the first men to fligh with an airplane,by engine aircraft . On Octuber 23,1906,he flew about 60m to a height about 2 or 3m with his 14 Bis,in the field of Bagatelle,Paris. Less a month later ,on November 12,he flew about 220 meters to a height about 6 meters. The 14 Bis was the first verified by the Aero Club of France of heviest thing flew by their own means.
Killed himself Santo Dumont lived in Guaruj叩-SP. In 1932 occurred the constitutionalist revolution,but that conflict happened with airplanes.Possibly any airplane flew over Guaruj叩 and this had caused a anguish at Santos Dumont,and he killed himself,on July 23 1932,at 59 years old. His heart is exposed at the Museum of Air Force in the field of Afonsos,in Rio de Janeiro-RJ,
Awards On July 31,1932,decree n尊10.447 changed the name of town of Palmira-MG to Santo Dumont. On October 16, 1936, the first airport in Rio de Janeiro was named of Santos Dumont. Law 7243 of 4 November 1984, awarded him the title of Patron of the Brazilian Air Force.
