Maarten started his marketing career on the agency side at JWT in his native Amsterdam, followed by Leo Burnett in Amsterdam and subsequently London. In London he then changed to McCann-Erickson, who relocated him to New York. His client at McCann-Erickson was The Coca-Cola Company, who lured Maarten away in 1999 to join Coca-Cola Japan and work on an integrated marketing approach for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. After successfully completing this assignment, Maarten moved to Coca-Cola Germany in 2002 to hand over his World Cup knowledge to the team there for the 2006 World Cup edition.
