Originally from the UK. Came for a holiday in Aug 1970 at the invitation of an Aussie girl I'd met in Berlin. Stood on the beach one day, not a soul to be seen, no foot prints in the sand, no car in the car park. 20C, sun shinning, clear blue sky. "Where is everybody" I ask. "This is winter" she replied, no one comes to the beach in winter." I could live in a country which has winters like this I thought. (She didn't tell me it can get to 40+ in the summer!) Set that as my goal and now married with 2 children arrived Oct in 1981. Been here ever since apart from 4 years spent in Hong Kong.
